Now, our final verses about marriage from Ephesians. V 31-33 (KJV)
For his cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and the two shall be one flesh.
This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
Cause - anti toutou - 'for this cause' signifying the principle or motive (Vines, P 92. Leave - (Greek word has letters not available on modern keyboards) means to leave down, behind, utterly. Shall - fulfill a promise (according to the dictionary. joined - to be joined or join self to. Second shall is a future tense. It takes time for a couple to become alike. It can be more easily seen in those who have been together fifty plus years. They mirror each other in words, gestures, etc. Flesh again is skin.
The great mystery I won't go into during this blog. It takes time to understand the full impact of the reference.
Love, is the same one in previous verses. Reverence here means - in awe.
So finally, a man is to leave his parents behind, join himself to his wife, and eventually, they will become 'one flesh' or mirror each other. It will be like the Great Mystery of Christ and his church and finally, the man is again told to love his wife as himself and for the wife to be in awe of her husband.
Interesting how the man got more instruction on how to treat his wife, huh?
