Christmas Movie Review : The Christmas Angel

'The Christmas Angel' is a touching film about a little girl who makes friends with a mysterious lady, played by Della Reese, living in a rundown house next door. Without giving much away, she discovers the woman's many secrets and in the end, the two are bonded.

There is also a love story between her mother (Teri Polo) and a new doctor in town (Kevin Sorbo). The supporting cast is marvelous including one of Disney's former childhood actresses.

I rate this film at about a four. It's a great family film.

Christmas Movie Review : Under the Mistletoe

The final film in the Christmas movie review series is 'Under the Mistletoe'. Starring Michael Shanks (Stargate SG1) and Jamie Ray Newman (Drop Dead Diva) throws together an unlikely couple during a radio contest where the heroine must pick a winner on who she is going to date. Included is her eight year old son who instigated the whole stunt, his enjoyment of hockey, and the coach.

There is an unusual aspect to the movie which the blogger won't ruin.

Available from amazon and rated at about a Four.

Christmas Movie Review : White Christmas

A true classic starring Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye two World War 2 vets. After the war they began a career in show business. They join forces with a sister singing act and set up a show at a ski lodge in Vermont. The men become romantically involved with the women, there's a falling out and reunion, making their former CO's Christmas one of the most memberable ever.

And yes, the song 'White Christmas' is featured.

This film is a four and half.

Christmas Movie Review : The Muppet Christmas Carol

The first major feature film made after Jim Henson's death, this movie lives up to the legacy he left behind. It is full of wonderful musical numbers, good acting and a great re-telling of an old familiar story. Kermit is cast as Bob Cratchit, Miss Piggy as his wife, and Robin as Tiny Tim. Michael Caine is Ebenizer Scrooge. The story teller is Gonzo and Rizzo the Rat. The scene with the Ghost of Christmas Future is so frightening, even the narrators duck out leaving the audience alone with the specter.

Most of the Muppet favorites appear in various roles. Definitely a family film and a soon to be classic.

Rated at four and half.

Christmas Movie Review : Miracle on 34th Street

'Miracle on 34th Street' has two verisons, one is in black and white with a remake in color. Both are good movies with the original classic being slightly better. Much of the story centers around whether or not Kris Kringle, who is hired to play Santa in Macys, is really who he says he is or crazy. Some of the action is the store, the heroine's apartment, and court room.

Is he really Santa? You the viewer decide.

Original is a Four. Remake about a Three.

Christmas Movie Review : The Santa Clause trilogy

'The Santa Clause' is a delightful twist on the Santa Claus mythos with a strong and touching story line, great supporting cast, and humor, despite the fart from the reindeer. The newly found father/son bond despite a falling out over the divorce of his parents, the great lines from the head elf, and the shrink who thinks the main character is crazy, makes this movie a must see.

A four and half.

'The Santa Clause 2' has some very silly moments beginning with the meeting of the Legendary Leaders at the North Pole and the silly full sized plastic Santa who nearly wrecks havoc on the holiday. What makes this movie is the courtship between Santa Scott and his son's principal. Not to mention the introduction of Lucy, the daughter of Scott's ex-wife and her new husband. Of, and let us not forget Chet, the reindeer in training.

A three and half.

'The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause' is probably the worst of the three. Focusing on Jack Frost wanting to be Santa and turn the holiday into a consumer nightmare. The hero of this film is Lucy.

A two.

Christmas Movie Review : Homeless for the Holidays

This week begins the Christmas Movie Review series beginning with the blogger's newest film, 'Homeless for the Holidays'.

On the upside, this film reflects the current economic conditions and a family living 'the good life' who suddenly find themselves having to face financial ruin due to the husband's job loss. There are beautiful moments with the family reconnecting, learning what is really important, and giving to those less fortunate.

Although based on a true story, using a narrator is a bit tacky, and quite a bit of over acting to the point of silliness. Not to mention way too much goodie-goodie and not enough reality to match the circumstances.

Good for one watch only and on a scale of one to five, with one the lowest and five the highest, this film is about a two and half.

Movie Review ; The Mark

Wow! Want to talk about a perfect blend of entertainment suitable for both secular and Christian audiences.

The film opens with a first trial human experiment in a cargo container on the docks in Bangkok, guarded by mercenaries who are attacked by Ninja type fighters. Most are killed except for Chad Turner who accidentally becomes a very valuable commodity for Avanti, a company waiting to announce a huge break through at a global conference in Berlin.

Most of the action takes place on a flight flying between Bangkok and Berlin. Some of the action reminds the viewer of 'Air Force One' with a hijacking attempt to capture 'the mark' Chad, executed hostages, and wounded pilots. Not to mention some twists very similar to the plane scenes in 'Left Behind'.

'The Mark' is an excellent film full of action, political intrigue and exotic locations. Not to mention happenings that could be ripped from today's headlines and realistic yet frightening future.

Out of five stars, one being the lowest and five the highest, this film is five.

Should you go with a Christian Publisher?

Christian writers should concentrate on telling good stories with flawed characters rather than preaching at their audience. In fact, the whole concept of  'Christian Publishing' needs to be redefined to cross over the main stream. After all, what's the use of preaching to choir?

Some books and authors have done this successfully. The Left Behind series by Jenkins and LayHaye. C.S. Lewis Chronicles of Narnia. J.R.R. Tolkien Lord of the Rings. The Love Inspired lines by Harlequin.

Yet, not all of the above is really 'great' writing. Despite its popularity, the Left Behind books have several plot problems, like our heroes being in a bunker in San Diego and all the coastal cities being flooded by the rising oceans, and card board characters. The Love Inspired lines are clean romances, yet most are not very well written and very good writers have a hard time getting their work accepted. Tolkien and Lewis are fun reads and great stories, but their style is archaic and somewhat alien to the modern readers.

So where are the new Christian writers who are very good and being published? Some are with Christian Publishing Houses, yet more and more are moving out into the secular world and getting their work accepted, even with Christian messages and characters.

Why is this happening? A combination of constraints placed on them by the CBA and God moving in ways we've not seen in a long, long while. The days ahead are exciting for Christian authors. Take advantage of the new doors being opened and don't be afraid to submit to a secular publisher.

After all, isn't the idea to reach out to the unsaved?

Wait on the Lord

One of the hardest things we do is 'wait on the Lord'. We live in a culture so used to instant gratification, that we tend to forget that sometimes, we need some maturity before we can move into what God has in mind for us.Honestly, we really do need to wait upon His timing because we're not always ready for what we think we are.

A good example is my writing career. I had everything all set up, my social marketing, my platform, and even finished work. Yet, I was made to wait until I was ready to move into this new venture.

Was it frustrating? YES! Was it worth the wait. YOU BET!

When the door opened for this new chapter of my life I had gained the maturity that I needed. When I get swelled headed - I know it and get humble because, I would not be where I am right now without waiting upon the Lord. HE knew when the timing would be best and all the wonderful opportunities I've been handed.

My best advice, whether you're waiting for a new job, a spouse, or a dream. WAIT. WAIT. and WAIT some more. God's timing is always perfect. It may not be OUR timing, but the right door at the right time will be there to be opened.

Question is - will you open it when it's offered? Or gripe because you didn't get what you wanted, when you wanted it, in the manner you wanted it?

The Pressure Cooker

Everything happens at once. How many times has this happened? Once? Twice? More times than can be counted?

Here's the current list:

Father recovering from minor heart attack.

Father-in-Law in hospital suffering from a major infection and not doing what the doctor's are telling him.

Need new car because the old one's transmission blew.

Starting a new job.

Strained relationship with spouse.

Trying to keep up writing career between personal and work conflicts.

What is keeping the blogger sane? Pure faith in God that every need will be met because He has proven Himself in the past to be faithful.

But my God shall, absolutely, meet all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Overcoming Fear

Overcoming fear is something we all struggle with. I'm no exception. Earlier this week I was forced to drive up into the mountains to check on the home and feed the cat of an older relative who is in the hospital. Was I scared? Oh, yeah. I really don't like distance driving particularly out of the 'safety' of the city.

However, when I arrived one very upset and lonely cat reassured me I had done the right thing. He allowed me to pet him, something he has not ever allowed before no matter how many times I had visited before, and he demanded to be brushed.

I also picked up the mail and several days of newspapers plus help arrange a local pet sitter.

My relative can now concentrate on getting well and not worry the cat is being taken care of or that there isn't someone checking on the house.

I got over my fear of distance driving and next time I won't mind the drive if I have to help out again. The reward for the benefit of someone else, not to mention the cat, was worth it.

Generational Curses

Generational curses are spoken of in the Bible and were talking about the learned behavior of children whose parents worshiped idols. Today, we'd call it learned behavior from parents who teach their kids to beat their offspring or spouse, speak negatively about everything or everyone, and even hatred of others who are a different color, religion or political belief.

Yet, through Christ Jesus, those curses can be broken. The abuser can be delivered and  stop beating. The negative put on a new mind and think positively. Understanding and acceptance can cross international lines as the Word of God spreads. In fact it already has.

Don't think Dear Ones that whatever curse might be following your family can't be broken. It's happened the blogger's family already and will not be spread to the newest generation. Through Christ it can happened. God has ALREADY healed you. Reach out and accept it. Start a new legacy through the promises of God's word.

The next generation and those after will thank you.

Sin is Sin

We humans tend to down grade sin. To us, lying is not as bad as adultery which isn't as bad as murdering someone.

Really? How come?

Because we all want to think we're better than someone else.

How does God see it?

The man who murdered his child in cold blood stinks just as much as the person who told the white lie to their spouse.

With God there are no 'degrees' of sinning.

It all stinks to him.

Sin is Sin.

How God uses Christian writing

One never knows how God uses the fiction we write to save someone's life. Without going into detail, a big name Christian writer recently shared a letter received by a young adult who had read his books. God used his writing to give courage and strength to the young adult resulting in removing two siblings from a bad situation.

Wow!

Mounting Evidence supporing Biblical stories

Historians have questioned for years many of the stories in the Old Testament saying they were only 'myth and legends'. However, recent discoveries are beginning to vindicate the accounts in the Bible. While what is presented here is not by any means complete, it is a sampling on how modern day archeology is proving the well known records.

1. Was Joseph really in Egypt in the position claimed as Pharaoh's second in command? Recently coins were . discovered baring his image.
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/133601#.UCA1T3lo8qg

2. Did the Israelites really wander the desert for forty years? On a recent special on one of the learning or history channels, the blogger doesn't remember which one, archeologists had found one obscure reference on an wall mentioning the Jewish people. No others have been found.

3. What happened to the Arc of the Covenant? One of the most intriguing mysteries how something so important seemed to vanish overnight. Again, there is a special run regularly on one of the learning or history channels presents the  hypothesis that the arc is being kept in Ethiopia. Now how it got there - that is still being speculated.

These are only a few examples and there are certain to be more as explorations continue and finds are publicly shared.

Modern Day Prophecies

In recent months there have been a number of prophecies, both religious and secular, saying the United States is due for a major economic meltdown. Money will be useless, the government will fall and then with no where to go, everyone will turn to the church who will rise up and take care of people's needs.

Part of this has already been seen with churches stepping in during Hurricane Rita to help survivors. Many have food banks. Others are sponsoring job networking groups. More recently over a thousand volunteers descended on Denver, CO with KLOVE for Sharefest and saved the school district lots of money in upgrades and repairs.

The increase in church or religious involvement in the community is wonderful. Hopefully, there will be more in the future.

However, what makes the prophecies believable and yet not are two factors.

1. Secular economists are saying the US and the entire world is headed for another major collapse. Millions will die and after that happens life will be better for the survivors as they rebuild.

2. The prophets keep making these predictions saying the US is under God's judgement. Yet still they ask for money to buy their books, CD's or DVD's to tell people how to survive and prosper in the horrible days ahead. Really? And they're the ones saying that money will be useless? If that is so, why don't they just give their resources away?

Will these events really come to pass? Or are leaders just preying on peoples fears?

Esther - Feasting with the King & Queen

5: 12. Tomorrow am I invited unto her also with the king. Haman had good reason to be honored as it was rare for subject to dine with royalty. Interesting to note here that the king would recline on a couch drinking the best wine while a 'guest' would be seated on the floor and served something inferior. One wonders if the scene in 'One Night with the King' is accurate. More than likely Haman was seated on the floor at the King's feet. Bible Manners and Customs. P. 205.

Esther - The Persian Queen

V2:17. We all know Esther became queen but she wasn't the king's only wife. She was just the one who had permission to wear the crown. She was the 'chief wife' or the 'queen-consort'. She was head of the female apartments, concubines would prostrate themselves before her, and when the king had a feast, she would have one for the women. She had her own money as was established by law. She could wear what she liked. This is shown very well in 'One Night with the King' with the beautiful wardrobe Esther wore. Bible Manners and Customs. P. 204.

Esther - The King's House

Esther 2:18 Out of the house of the women unto the King's house. Where the women were kept was separate from the rest of the palace. The virgins had their own apartments, there was on for the concubines and for the queen and the other wives. The first two were run by the chamberlains or eunuchs. The Queen was in charge of herself and NOT watched over by a chamberlain but had one who followed her orders. It is unclear in 'One Night with the King' whether the eunuch who stayed with Esther followed her orders or ruled over her. Understanding the custom clarifies the situation. Bible Manners and Customs. P. 204.

Esther - Vashti's refusal

The Bible, like any other book, must be read in context to when it was written. Like in Literature classes in college, those who truly wish to understand the significance of certain verses, there is need to understand the custom behind it. Let's start in the book of Esther. In the movie 'One Night with the King' those around the Persian Ruler made him think his wife was having a feast to protest the war. The Bible says she had a feast for the women. (1:9) Truth was women had their feasts separately from the men. It was an ancient custom and one could say Persia was 'behind the times'. So when the King sent for Vashti, he was violating the tradition of the day and she was justified in her refusal, regardless of his reaction. Reference: Bible Manners and Customs. Page 203.

'Why Not Question' : Movie Review - 'Jerusalem Countdown'

Ripped right of today's headlines, 'Jerusalem Countdown' tells the story of FBI agents who are trying to stop terrorists from bombing various US cities with nuclear weapons. Oddly enough, they discover the government has a plan in place in the event of rapture and both are thrown into shock as they try to stop the deaths of the Israel's leaders. Well written this film keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat. Some of the failures are shocking and realistic. Hero's don't always win. The ending poses many questions and desire to see what eventually happens to the FBI agents. Also presented is an interesting take on the rapture that is not to be missed. On a scale of 1 to 5 this film is a strong 4.5. Highly recommended for those who love spy thrillers.

'Why Not Question' : Movie Review - 'The Grace Card'

A horrible accident claims the life child. It is carried around by the family for years. The wife, finally tired of the mess, goes to counseling for help. In the mean time, her husband's partner is a part-time pastor with a family who would love to be n the ministry full-time but their poor church doesn't pay a high enough salary to allow it. Their situations thrown together with a series of robberies, provides a powerful background for the story. This film has strong characters and touching circumstances to reach all audiences. Disappointing is the small part 'the Grace Card' actually plays since it is not even introduced until halfway through the story and then disappears pretty much until the emotional ending. It is well written and few could not identify with any of the characters caught up in their problems and day to day disappointing lives. Still, God's hand in during these dire straights is clearly shown. On a scale from 1, the lowest to 5 the highest, this film earns a 3.5.

'Why Not Question" : Movie Review - 'WWJD What would Jesus do?'

'WWJD What would Jesus do?' focuses in on a church and town that is fading. Faith is low and the leadership of the town would do anything, including demolishing the church to put in a casino to save their town. Enter a drifter whose challenging words seem to impact the community who no one would help or give him a job. Although this film is a bestseller and has a stellar cast, the plot line is somewhat disappointing and the dropped angle of drifter's involvement half way through the story lessons the impact of the final outcome. 'WWJD' is however, a lovely family film and has some great music and poignant moments. Recommended but only earns a rating of 2.5 on a scale from 1 to 5.

'Why Not Question' : Movie Review - 'What if...'

'What If...' follows the tradition of 'It's a Wonderful Life' or 'The Family Man' allowing a successful investment banker to discover what his life would have been like if he'd followed God's plan for his life rather than his own. With the help of an angel named Mike, protrayed by John Ratzenberger, Ben Walker (Ken Sorbo) takes a walk from being single and rich to being a pastor of a failing church, married and father of two daughters.

The film is filled with humorous moments and strong emotional ones. The dead fish scenes are just too funny for any parent who has had to help a child deal with the death of a pet. Not to mention the final outcome and solution. Or a teen daughter liking a guy and how 'dad' over reacts and does the wrong thing.

Awarded the Dove Award for Family Seal of Approval the film is highly recommended for those who enjoy Christian films.

'Why Not Question' : Movie Review - 'Game of Your Life'

'Game of Your Life' is the last of the Walmart Family Movie Night series. It follows a young man leaving home to attend a creative college specializing in Gaming. He meets his teammates, is challenged to break the 'no consulting' rule due to dire family circumstances back home. He is taken off his team and has to learn what really is important - holding onto the past or moving forward into his future. This film very much focuses on the Gaming world, complete with geeks who act and dress differently. Some of the references are lost on the general public but no doubt resonates with those who are part of this sub culture. The unique strengths of the characters presented, for instance the leader of thee, team who tells the main hero he's off the team for his lack of focus and breaking the rules, who risks him not talking to her again. The comedy team who are both his room and team mates and spice up the movie although their somewhat cliche'. Also, the couple who helps them acting both as mentors and away from home parents. It is a 'coming of age' story. In some ways it reminds the blogger of films like 'Uncle Buck' and 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer', the film. Definitely recommended for those with children who are hard core gamers. On a scale from 1 to 5, this film is a 3.5.

'Why Not Question' : Movie Review - 'Game Time Tackling the Past'

'Game Time Tackling the Past' depicts a professional football player on the decline of his career. He returns home due to a family emergency, reconnects with them, and discovers a new passion for the sport that is not self serving or self centered.

The movie shows what can happen to someone when they live only for themselves and how what appears to be a tragedy or ruin, can actually work into something far better than a dream now past its prime. Filled with emotional moments and new friendships, this film shows the power of forgiveness and love.

There are also some faith filled moments depicted.

Many parts of this film reminds the viewer of moments in 'Facing the Giants' or 'Flywheel'.

On a scale of 1 to 5, this film is a 4.

'Why Not Question' : Movie Review - 'Who is Simon Miller?'

'Who is Simon Miller' is a heart thudding chase from the United States to Europe as a family tries to find Simon Miller. Caught up in international intrigue and chased by bad guys, the family learns about the secrets that have been kept from them and have to struggle with the question of whether they can trust their husband/father.

This first attempt at placing a film outside the US is a complete success, giving the flavor of Europe and life quite different than most in American are used to. The twists and turns are unexpected, the bad guys believable and the ending, well, not quite as strong as it could have been.

If viewers enjoy spy movies with a family twist like 'Patriot Games' then this is the film for you.

On a scale of 1 to 5, it's about a 3.5.

'Why Not Question' : Movie Review - 'Field of Vision'

'Field of Vision' subtly focuses on the problem of bullying and one young football player who stands up for the new kid at school, the target of other players. Although the consequences are tough, as it would be in any high school with a championship playoff in the balance, the final payoff wins the day.

The movie is a wonderful balance between fantasy and real life. Without giving the plot away, the blogger praises the script writer for mixing the two successfully to an excellent and believable ending. The symbol of the horse and literary figures also plays a prominent role in the film as well. It also encourages children to read but to balance the passion with friends.

If the viewer enjoyed 'Facing the Giants' or 'We are Marshall' you'll love this film.

During one scene a popular Christian song is played. It's on a car radio.

On a scale from 1 to 5, the movie is a strong 3.75.

'Why Not Question' : Movie Review - 'Truth be Told'

'Truth be Told' is about a woman who an expert at repairing couple's relationships. She meets a media mogul,(Ronny Cox) who she helps at party and unexpectedly offers her a chance of a lifetime - to have her own radio show. There's a catch - she must bring her family - which she doesn't have but the mogul thinks she does because he saw her talking to an old college friend there with his children. The couple talk about it and journey to the New Mexico ranch, all the while trying to find a way to tell the mogul the real truth.

The film is a delightful romantic comedy and follows the tradition of many films done with the same theme, like 'While You Were Sleeping' or 'Sleepless in Seattle'. Predictable yet heart warming, the many twists are unexpected and make this movie unique. Not to mention the obvious 'green' powered southwestern ranch, the beautiful scenery and the type of work that goes on shown in all its honesty, makes 'Truth be Told' a wonderful movie.

Directed by Star Trek's Next Generations - Jonathan Frakes.

On a scale of 1 to 5, this film is a 4.

'Why Not Question' : Movie Review - 'Change of Plans'

'Change of Plans' features a professional singer with her engineer husband who designs airplanes for the military. They enjoy their lives, have a modern apartment and are making arrangements to advance their careers. Unexpectedly, the wife receives news her best friend has died and she had been named the guardian of the their four multi-racial children. The couple temporarily take custody while the social worker works on finding the youngsters a forever home.

Following the tradition of 'Baby Boom' and 'Rent a Kid', 'Change of Plans' is a wonderful example of how one can plan their life, only to have the unexpected happen and what you thought was important, actually isn't.

Featuring Joe Flanigan (Stargate Atlantis) and Brooke White, the film is filled with heart touching moments and some of the best music yet to be featured in the Walmart films. The plot is somewhat predicable, but the script writer did an excellent job of tossing in some twists, and the fact that Joe Flanigan has children of his own, which he admits in the extras, comes out very clearly in his scenes with the boys.

Grace is said at the dinner scene and of course, there is no missing the Walmart brands in the kitchen.

On a scale of 1 to 5, this film is a 4.

'Why Not Question' : Movie Review - 'A Walk in my Shoes'

'A Walk in my Shoes' follows what happens to a teacher when she condemns a mother and suddenly finds herself living the other woman's life. She discovers matters are not what she thought and why her student has been having such difficulty in her class. It also features a young woman who the viewer is lead to believe is probably an angel.

The film is an interesting fantasy after the tradition of 'It's a Wonderful Life' and 'Touched by an Angel'. With an open ending, the viewer is left to believe there might be more in this series with the 'angel'. This has yet to happen. Again a somewhat predictable plot line but heart tugging as you follow the teacher as her student's mother and their struggles.

On a scale of 1 to 5, it is a 3.

'Why Not Question' : Movie Review - 'The Jensen Project'

The next movie, 'The Jensen Project' follows the adventure of teen age boy who is the son of two brilliant parents. They had removed themselves from a think tank project but were recalled when an emergency emerges. Their son teams up with a fellow girl genius and the two of them embark upon an adventure to discover who caused the problem.

A good attempt at a Science Fiction/Mystery film but also predictable. The flying car was a fun addition and for the teen audience, the tension between the girl and boy would be all they could hope for. The parents' and other adult roles are downplayed, the bad guys stereotypes, which makes the film a bit less than it could have been.

If the viewer enjoyed films such as 'Return to Witch Mountain' or other Disney features, then they will enjoy this movie.

On a scale of 1 to 5, this film is a 3.

'Why Not Question' ; Movie Review - 'Secrets of the Mountain'

The demand for family entertainment has been growing and whatever the reader may think about Walmart's business practices, the company launching into the film industry and producing a bi-monthly Family Movie night, was as stroke of marketing genius.

Over the next few weeks 'Why Not Question' will be reviewing the movies and highly recommends picking them up at your local Walmart. They're generally priced at $13.00. The blogger has even seen some of the films carried in local Christian stores.

'Secrets of the Mountain'

A divorced mom receives an offer for a piece of property inherited from her favorite uncle after his death. Wanting to reconnect with her children, she bundles them off for a weekend in a small town. They embark on an adventure to discover a rare treasure kept within the mountain - one for which a wealthy corporation would pay a small fortune for - and puts them all in mortal danger.

The film puts a family spin on an Indiana Jones/National Treasure type adventure. Walmart's first film, and there is no missing the products featured in the kitchen scene, it is one of their better efforts and a totally fun film. There are moments to make the viewer cry, cheer, and by the end, hold their breath during the daring escape to safety.

Writing is tight, the story complete, and there is no doubt left in the viewers mind about happens to the family and how they've all grown.

On a scale of 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest), the blogger rates this movie as a 4.

'Why Not Question' : Patience

Evie: 'Patience is a virtue.'
Rick: 'Not right now it isn't.'

The two above lines from 'The Mummy' shows an example of the conflict in today's culture. There are those who understand that waiting patiently for something is far more valuable than those who think they want what they want 'right now'.

Granted, the characters were in mortal danger at the time with the mummy and his followers bearing down on them. However, Evie figured out the vital clue that ultimately saved all their lives.

Being patient about a dream or desire, is far more rewarding than running out and grabbing what a person wants.

Consequences seen in our culture right now are bankruptcies in record numbers due to credit card purchases of items wanted and the inability to pay for them.

Massive foreclosures and people losing their homes, often houses that were far too expensive for them in the first place. Granted, some of these were caused by the greed of lender and other financial disasters like losing a job or medical bills.

Not living on a budget and within the person's means.

Those who are more patient have done things like buy a new home and being able to pay it off.

Pay cash for everything.

Price items wanted and wait until they can afford them.

Pay off credit card balances every month so there's no finance charge.

Find the right mate rather than settling.

Find the right job rather than a series of 'survival' positions.

Patience is also a fruit of the spirit and is wonderful thing to have. It also helps the believer wait on God's timing, rather than rushing out and making a huge mistake that could cost a high price in the end.

Patience - has it's reward. Be patient and wait on the Lord.

'Why Not Question' : Movie Review - 'Time Changer'

In honor of AnomalyCon, the local Steampunk convention, this weeks blog will be about the Christian movie 'Time Changer'.

'Time Changer' is film about a Victorian professor who can freely teach Godly beliefs in the classroom and is sent one hundred years into the future. What he discovers is that God has been pulled from the public classrooms and church has become about social activities.

Although a bit preachy at times, 'Time Changer' is a wonderful attempt at Christian Steampunk, a very hot genre in Science Fiction right now. It is fun and shows the difficulty of a Victorian era man trying to cope with modern day and the change it has on his life upon returning to his own time.

Recommended for fans of Steampunk who want to see an example on how to use their faith in this exciting new genre.

'Why Not Question' : Book Review - 'The Act of Marriage after 40' by TIm & Beveryly LaHaye

'The Act of Marriage After 40' is a must read for couples. It is a frank, honest approach to sex and the problems that can occur with the changes his/her body goes through. It is also a lesson of loving your partner, whether or not sex is a part of your relationship.

Some examples of things shared:

Before he turned fifty, hubby learned there are better ways to set the mood for intimacy than begging, pouting, or negotiating. (p. 80)

You're not too proud to admit being exhausted three-quarters of the way through. (p. 80)

It even covers 'in sickness and in health'. 'Accepting you spouses disability in the sexual arena will take time. You may have feelings of resentment, flashes of anger, waves of grief, and bouts of depression. Your disabled spouse is experiencing all these emotions times ten.' (p. 149)

Praise for the writer daring to address this problem and offering solutions that don't include divorcing your mate and finding someone else. Not to mention giving an example of a couple who were married over thirty years, never had sex, but had a close loving relationship.

Issues such as ED and oral sex are discussed openly and frankly as are other topics too numerous to cover in this blog.

Loving your partner physically is an important part of the marriage relationship and knowing how to do so, no matter the circumstances, makes this book a winner.

'Why Not Question' : Today's problems

Life is full of disappointments and sometimes we think God is just plain crazy.

For instance, we land a job we really don't want and can't understand why we're wasting time doing something that is so far below our talent level we dread getting up in the morning. However, there might be one incident that makes it worth while and we hope God does something good with it like He promises.

Life, particularly today, if very unpredictable. Jobs are scare. Finances are tight. People are losing their homes and living in their cars or in the streets. Employers are picky and unreasonable.

How can we, as Christians, shine in a place so full of hopeless and need?

Yes, some churches are providing food banks. Others have stepped in to help those struck by tragedy. Many did so during Katrina, Rita and the tornado outbreak of 2011.

Yet, as individuals we are overwhelmed. Many of us are no better off in this time of trouble.

Is there an answer?

We can only hold on to God and pray He provides for our needs.

'Why Not Question' : Creationist vs Evolutionist - Part 3

The final piece is about humans. This is one thing both the Creationist and Evolutionist agree - we all came from one man and one woman. This has been proven genetically and Scientists have posted their findings for all to see.

The only difference is that the Bible says God created man in His own image.

The word image is tselem - shade, a phantom, illusion, resemblance. Huh, an interesting mix of meanings. Created is bara - to be prepared, formed, created.

What is God? According to His word, love and spirit.

So, if one took a literal translation - one would say that God created Adam and Eve in His image, which is love and spirit. Yet, little is said about the physical form except they were to multiply after their own kind and replenish the Earth.

Whoa...wait a minute...replenish the Earth? The Hebrew word is male - it means fullness, fill, all along, all that there is, multitude. The word replenish is a bad choice and does not mean 'do again what has already been done'. Instead, they are being told to fill the Earth - they are all there is.

Granted, there has been much speculation on where all the other people came from that had to be warned about Cain after he murdered Abel. Yet, on the sixth day God told Adam and Eve to be fruitful and multiply.

So, were there more children from them then are recorded in the pages of the Bible? If so, did they leave Eden and spread all over the Earth.

There are many unanswered questions and huge holes left in the record of what modern man now knows existed. Yet, from the evidence garnished in the few studied verses - is that really so?

The written word is still an infant compared to a long, long oral history. Oral histories can be lost if the person with the knowledge dies before passing on what he/she knew.

And what traps are we, modern day humans with our dependence on technology, setting for ourselves and what of our history will be lost if there's a crash from which we don't recover?

The same can be true of the Bible. Much has been lost over the centuries, but the core is still there.

And Science, whether they like or not, are proving the Bible more and more true - everyday.

'Why Not Question' : Creationist vs Evolutionist - Part 2

Last week in Part 1, verses were covered about how much time it might actually have taken to create the Earth and how God didn't seem to create anything until Gensis 1:21. The blogger will leave the verses to the reader to read for themselves about the other four days.

Genesis 1: 20, 21

And God said, Let the waters (mayim - liquid) bring (bo - to cause to come in) forth abundantly the moving creature (nephesh - breathing creature) that hath life (nephesh - breathing creature), and fowl (oph - covered with feathers or covered with wings) what may fly above the Earth (erets - land) in the open (pene - face of) firmament (raqia - expanse, visible arch of the sky) of heaven (shamayim - heavens, heaved up things).

Here's where evolution and the Bible seem to agree - life came from the water. However, note one difference - there were already birds in the air. Could these have been the survivors of the great war fought in heaven? The fowl were either covered with feathers or wings to fly in the visible arch of heaven and possibly heaved up things. Left over dust from the asteroid?

Does the Bible actually record this event of 65 million years ago?

Now, note the first new creation.

And God created (bara - to prepare, form, fashion, create) great (gadol - elder, mighty, more, noble, bring up, exceed, promote) whales (tannim - a marine or land monster, dragon, sea serpent, or whale), and every living (chai - lively, alive) creature (nephese - breathing creature) that moveth, which the waters (mayim - liquid) brought forth abundantly, after their kind (min - species), and every winged (kanaph - as covering and protecting) fowl (oph - covered with feathers or wings) after his kind (min - species), and God saw it was good.

Now, God brings something new. He creates what the Bible translates as whales, yet the word can also mean dragon or sea serpent - or some type of land or marine monster.

So now, another question is raised - were dragons real once? Were sea serpents?

In verse 22 it says God blessed them and told them to fill the waters and the air.
So ends the fifth day.

In the next two verses God again speaks creatures into existence. Nothing new is created. Yet, one gets the sense the new creatures are mammals. Again, agreeing with the evolutionary pattern.

'Why Not Question' : Creationist vs Evolutionist - Part 1

2 Peter 3:8

But, beloved, be not ignorant (lanthano - to be or lie hid) of this one (mai - agree, one, first) thing, that one(mia - agree, one, first)day (hemera the time space between dawn and dark) is with the Lord as a thousand (chilioi - literal thousand) years (eniautos - literal year), and a thousand( (chilioi) -years(eniatutos) as one day (hemera - the time space between dawn and dark).

Evolutionists say the Earth is much older than the recorded history says. Creationists think the Bible means literally seven days. Yet, in this verse, it says a 'day' is as a thousand years. Note, the use of a simile here. Literally it means a day with the Lord is like a thousand years. Think Peter is trying to tell the believers something?

Gensis 1:1 In the beginning (reshith - first or former) God created (bara - to prepare, form, fashion, do, make)the heaven(shamayim - sky, unseen celestial places, heaved up things) and the Earth (erets - land, to be firm).

Evolutionists theorize that the that 'the big bang' created the universe. Even here in Genesis, created means to fashion and note one of the meanings to heaven is 'heaved things up'. Hmmmm...maybe both parties are really on the same page and just don't realize it.

Genesis 1:2 And the earth(erets - land, to be firm) was without form (tohu - a ruin, vacancy, to lie waste, a desolation of surface) and void (bohu - emptiness, undistinguishable ruin); and darkness (choshek - (misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow, wickedness)was upon the face (panim - against, anger, battle, employ, endure, cast out, mark, look ) of the waters (mayim - liquid).

In this verse the reader is hit with a mixture of meanings. Could it be the Earth was a formless blob filled with liquid? The Evolutionists and Scientists seem to think so.

Yet, there seems to be something else. Another translation could be that the Earth was laid waste to by wickedness because of a battle and nothing was left but water?

Could it be between verse one and two that the battle in heaven between God and Lucifer happened and the Earth was destroyed because of it? It is an interesting matter of speculation and unfortunately, there simply isn't enough information to form a strong hypothesis.

However, it is interesting that in the following verses God simply speaks everything into existence, as if He were simply doing what he had done before and doesn't actually create anything until verse 21.

Another possible question is - could this have happened in the era of the dinosaurs? Scientists have found the asteroid that hit the Earth off the coast of Mexico. They also know what havoc the dust in the air would have caused and how almost every living thing died.

The main reason this is being asked, is because of the fowl of the air. We all know birds are the descendants from dinosaurs.

Next week Part 2 of Creationist vs Evolutionist

'Why Not Question' : The Blessing

As Christians, we are entitled to the Aaronik blessing given by God to the children of Israel in Numbers 6:23-27. How? According to a verse in the New Testament, Christians are grafted onto the branch of Judah. (Reference not given since the blogger has seen the verse but can't find it.) What that means is that as Christians we are have a part in the Jewish inheritance.

Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, on this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them.

The Lord bless (Barak - benefit) thee, and keep (shamar - take heed, protect)thee:
The Lord make his face shine ( or - give light or cause to shine) upon thee, and be gracious (chanan - literal gracious) unto thee.
The Lord lift up his countenance (panim - face) upon thee, and give thee peace (shalom - completeness).

And they shall put my name (shem - honor, authority, character) upon the children on Israel and I will bless (barak - benefit) them.

Wow! The Lord blesses his people. So why do we say 'May God Bless you'? We should say, 'God will bless you!' Because according to the Bible,God blesses his people. There is no 'he might'.

It's time for Christians to stand up with their Jewish brothers/sisters and claim what is part of our rightful inheritance.

'Why Not Question' : Movie Review - 'Courageous'

It has been an absolute delight to watch the development of both the acting skills and the quality improvement of the films done by Sherwood Pictures. 'Courageous' their fourth film, begins with a car theft, a chase scene and a 'Oh, my' moment.

The movie centers around four police officers and a construction worker, each of whom discover the importance of being not just a father, but also a husband. There are funny moments, like tossing plastic bottles into a trash can, moments which bring the audience to tears due to a tragedy, and those where one can't help but cheer with the victories won.

One interesting side note is the two tie-ins done with their previous film 'Fireproof'. The first, driving by the fire station and the second the news broadcast covered on the TV the main character, played by Alex Kendrik, is watching.

'Courageous' is highly recommended and has already has won a Dove award for family viewing.

Also recommended is the novelization done by Randy Alcorn, which fills in those missing gaps in the film and brings back some of characters met in 'Fireproof' and 'Facing the Giants'.

Also suggest picking up the soundtrack with songs by well known artists, Casting Crowns, Mark Harris, Third Day and many more. This is also their first film using a full orchestra.

'Why Not Question' : Book Review - 'Abigail's Story' by Ann Burton

'Women of the Bible' series, 'Abigail’s Story' by Ann Burton

Abigail was one of King David's wives, but little is said of her in the Bible. In this wonderful novel about her life you learn about how she came to be wed to Napal, her first 'unofficial' meeting with David, and the love that develops between them before the events unfold that force her to the decision that saves her worthless husband's life.

This adaption is a little edgy but well written. A good attempt by a secular publisher to try and infiltrate the Christian market. A must read for women who enjoy stories about Biblical figures.

'Why Not Question' : Book Review - 'The Shadow Women' by Angela Elwell Hunt

A fascinating fresh look at the life of Moses as told by the women who influenced him, his sister, his adoptive Egyptian Princess mom and his wife. Rich in tapestry and customs of the time, it shows another side to the tragedy and triumphant of the familiar story. It is a much needed addition, although fictional, to remind us all that not just men lived during Biblical days.

A must read for fans of historical fiction.

'Why Not Question' : Book Review - 'The Redemption of Sarah Cain' by Beverly Lewis

‘The Redemption of Sarah Cain' by Beverly Lewis.

Completely different than the movie but wonderfully good. Sarah Cain's Amish sister dies and leaves the care of her five children to their successful, career orientated aunt. In the film version, Sarah brings the children to the big city, but in Ms. Lewis', she instead moves to her sister's house and takes over raising the children. There are touching moments and hints into the Amish life, not to mention a more clear ending than the film indicates in regards to Sarah's own future.

An absolute must read for fans of Amish fiction. Beverly Lewis is, as far as the blogger knows, the one who began the trend.
