'Why Not Question' : The number 8

The number eight in the Bible means the first of a new series and super abundant.
It is associated with Resurrection and Regeneration and the beginning of a new era or order.

For example, Noah was the eighth person to emerge from the Ark after the Earth was covered during the flood. It set in place a new order.

It is also interesting to note that circumcision was performed on the eighth day after a child was born and the first born was given to Jehovah on the eighth day.

Referencing Resurrection, Christ rose on the first day of the week which was actually the eighth day, beginning a new era for both the Jewish people and the gentiles.

The Feast of Tabernacles lasts eight days. Seven to complete the harvest and the eighth to designate a new beginning.

There are many more examples in the Bible but only a few are shared here. But it is obvious that the number eight holds great significance to the believer and should be studied to gain greater understanding of Christian spiritual inheritance.

'Why Not Question' : Christmas - Myth and Truth

The blogger of 'Why Not Question' celebrates Christmas as a nice family holiday but has removed much of the religious significance it once held.

Why?

Because the blogger understands the truths about how the holiday truly came to pass and the traditions it has encompassed over the years.

Myth : Christ was born on Christmas day.
Truth : The shepherds were in the fields with the sheep. This only happens during lambing season. More than likely Jesus was born sometime in the fall. Estimations by Biblical experts places the birth sometime in September. December would be much too cold for the shepherds and the sheep. Sheep are very fragile and die easily from the elements.

Speculation : Christmas was invented by a certain religious group in order to entice the pagans into the church by embracing the Solstice.

Myth: There were only three wise men and they were present at Jesus' birth.
Truth: The Bible never gives a specific number. It simply says Magi and tells about the three gifts given. The Bible specifically says Mary and Joseph were in a house - NOT the stable. It also says that Harod killed all male children under two years old and indicates that a great deal of time had passed between the birth and Magi's arrival.

Myth: A huge star was present.
Truth: There were a series of astronomical conjunctions and that caused quite a stir in Rome. The Jewish people were the only ones who had no such knowledge, they didn't pay any attention to the stars, emphasized by Harod having to call the religious leaders to find out what the Magi were talking about.

There are quite a number of other myths and truths mixed in with Jesus' birth and Biblical scholars are researching to find out what really was going on historically. It doesn't detract from the savior's birth. Instead, it adds to the current Christian's understanding of what truly happened and brings the Word of God to life far more accurately - destroying the mythos that has sprung up over the centuries.

Christians should celebrate the truths coming to light because each new historical fact proves Jesus was born, is a real person, and not a myth.

'Why Not Question' : Movie - 'A Christmas Snow', a Christian paranormal. (Spoiler alert)

Kathleen is career driven woman who gets snowed in with the daughter of the man she's dating, Lucy, and an older man who rescued her from some hoodlums, who misses his bus to see his family, and she finally takes him home to stay with her. It is a delightful story about the heroine finding herself again through the two people she's snowed in with and forgiving herself for thinking she was responsible, as most children do, for her father leaving when she was young.

Sounds cliche' doesn't it? However, and the twists come with Lucy acting as a therapist to help Kathleen face her past, and discovering the rescued man, Sam, was actually her dead father.

Whoa! Wait a minute! Sam was dead?

Yep.

Hmmm. It is interesting to note that this film has been well received and widely watched world wide, yet no one seems to realize that 'A Christmas Snow' is actually a Christian paranormal. How? Sam was a ghost - a necessary element in the genre.

Yet, Christian publishers are shying away from the genre when it has already been shown how to successfully use a ghost in a story about forgiveness and moving on with one's life.

With the success of this film, the paranormal genre needs to be rethought, although not used as it is in the secular market. Or perhaps it should in order to open doors for witnessing to unbelievers.

'Why Not Question' : Religious Bumper Stickers

We've all seen religious bumper stickers on cars. Do they really witness to others? Or do they cause the unbeliever to roll their eyes and make some comment about holy rollers or intolerant condemning biggits who preach on thing and do another? Or can they be examples of how to act on our nations highways when road rage is the norm?

A very good question and one only the reader, if they have bumper stickers on their cars, can answer. Perhaps, it will make everyone stop to think twice about how they act behind the wheel, particularly when they're loudly proclaiming their faith.

Examples of religious bumper stickers:
1. The fish.
2. The fish swallowing the Darwin fish. 'Survival of the Forgiven'.
3. My Boss is a Jewish Carpenter.
4. KLOVE 91.1 'Positive and Encouraging'.
5. The Big Bang Theory" God spoke and 'Bang' it happened.
6. If You're Living Like There Is No God, You'd Better Be Right!
7. Are you making an appointment with St. Peter on that cell phone? (This one isn't really but is included for a giggle.)

'Why Not Question' : Three Days and Three Nights - Where Did They Go?

The Bible tells us Jesus was in the grave for three days and three nights. Yet most churches teach Christ was crucified on Friday and rose on Sunday morning. Does anyone else see the error in this? If tradition is correct - than Christ was only in the tomb for two nights and one day. What happened to the other two full days and one night? And why do people blindly believe what is being taught rather than what God's word says?

We are instructed in Timothy to study God's word, workman who do not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth. However, it seems today's Christians are too 'busy' to bother and only listen to what their priest, preacher, pastor, tell them. Thus, an erroneous teaching about the when Christ was crucified and rose, has stayed around for far longer than it should have.

It is far more likely Jesus died on Wednesday and rose on Saturday. The Jewish day runs from Sunset to Sunset - not Midnight to Midnight as it does today. Thus the sabbath would have started on Friday when the sun went down to Saturday at the same time. One would also speculate that Christ rose at the moment the sun set. The next morning the women went to the tomb - since it was customary to wait three days. Seems they wanted to make sure the person was actually dead. This little piece of information gives new meaning to the raising of Lazarus, the reaction of his sisters and why Jesus waited longer before going to see Mary and Martha.

Most Westerners are unfamiliar with Eastern culture and so this very important point escapes the reader. So Christ being in the grave three days and three nights emphasizes the point he was dead. It is also interesting to note NO ONE had come back from the grave - not in those days. So Jesus rising was quite spectacular.

Adding these little known details begins to bring the accuracy of the Bible to the fore front, defusing what tradition teaches and enriching God's word for the modern day believer.

'Why Not Question' : Religion and Star Trek

'Bread and Circuses', an episode from Classic Star Trek, dropped the heroes Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy, into a Roman based world. The only thing striking them odd about the whole thing was a spreading belief about sun worship. It did not jive with what they knew about Rome back on Earth.

At the end, when they were finally safe back on the bridge of the Enterprise, it was Uhura who informed them it wasn't about worshiping the sun, rather, the son of God. It clicked in Kirk's mind that Rome also had Christ and wow, the word was just getting around.

Unfortunately, in Star Trek Next Generation, any type of belief in God had been done away with and the galaxy, a hundred years later, was filled with atheists. Although the crew did, from time to time, run into beings with religious beliefs, any type of belief in God was completely ignored.

Which begs the question, what happened in those hundred years to destroy God in the eyes of humanity? A question not answered by the writers and giving the new show a different flavor from the original.

'Why Not Question' : Religion and Firefly

Another show representing religious beliefs was Joss Whedon's 'Firefly'. In the first episode 'Serenity', the main character, Malcolm Reynolds, wore a religious medallion but lost his faith after his side lost the rebellion. Years later, Book, a type of missionary, joins the crew first as a passenger and then decides to stay, since he has no real destination.

One fun interaction is between Book, and River, who is, shall we say, slightly crazy because the government played with her brain. The episode is 'Jaynestown'.

Book: What are we up to, sweetheart?
River: Fixing your Bible.
Book: I-uh-what?
River: Bible's broken. Contradictions, faulty logistics - it doesn't make sense.
Book: No,no you can't...
River: So we'll integrate non-progressional evolution theory with God's creation of
Eden - eleven inherent parallels already there. Eleven, important number, prime number, one goes into the house of eleven eleven times but always comes out one -
Book: River, just take it easy. You shouldn't -
River: Noah's ark is a problem -
Book: Really.
River: We'll have to call it early quantum state phenomenon - only way to fit five-thousand species of mammal on the same boat.
Book:Gimme that! River! You don't fix the Bible!
River: It's broken. It doesn't make sense.
Book: It's not about making sense. It's about believing in something and letting that belief be real enough to change your life. It's about "faith". You don't fix faith, River. It fixes you.

I'd say the writer nailed part of it correctly. Faith does fix us. What is left out is the element of Christ, but the inclusion of Book in a futuristic, transplanted group of descendants from Earth, shows that in spite of the wish to destroy God, belief in Him will follow humanity to the stars.

'Why Not Question' : Religion and Babylon 5

One TV show in particular showed a great deal of respect for the various religions on Earth. It was Babylon 5. During the first season there was one episode where the various ambassadors on the station shared their major beliefs with each other. When asked about Earth's, Commander Sinclair took the Minbari, Centuari, and everyone else to meet with not just one religious leader, but several. A very realistic approach to show that even in the future, mankind will not have 'one' major religion.

It is also interesting to note the second in command, Susan Ivanova, was a Russian Jew. Her beliefs were obvious, including sitting shiva, a type of wake where those who attend share stories about the dead loved one, apologizing to God when something was said that shouldn't have been, and a continued steadfast faith.

Commander Sinclair also had strong faith. In the end, he transformed into the Minbari leader, Valen, who founded their ruling Gray Council and taught them a religious system whose origins came from Earth. Granted, the Minbari believed in a type of reincarnation with the souls being reborn into the next generation and thought that Minbari souls were being born into humans. A belief playing an important component all throughout the series.

Included as well was a group of priests who set up shop on the station. In a wonderful episode about forgiveness they helped John Sheridan, who was in command for three seasons, come to terms with the fate of a serial killer. Such people suffered death of personality and were reprogrammed. They spent the rest of their lives serving humanity. It was hard for Sheridan, but it was the choice of leader of the priests who personally chose the killer to be part of his order and sent the man back to Earth to be trained.

In 'The Lost Tales', a DVD released after the series ended, one of the mini episodes shared was about a demon who hitched a ride to the station. The person was captured and then returned to Earth in the custody of a priest. The interesting premise introduced was a concept that the demons would always be Earth bound and only humanity's children would inherit the stars.

Although not strictly Christian, the screen writer showed all belief systems with respect and serves as an excellent example for writers of the Science Fiction genre to follow.

'Why Not Question' : The parallel of the vampire legend to Christ

With Halloween only a couple of days ago, it seems appropriate to talk about the parallel of vampire lore to Christianity. While an odd topic, it certainly fits within the realm of this blog.

Let's start with vampires raising from the dead, just as Christ did. There is also a legend floating around that Judas was the first of the undead. Fitting, so it seems for the betrayer of Jesus.

Next, comes the blood. By Christ's blood we are redeemed, our sins washed away, making us acceptable to God. When we accept Jesus as our savior and Lord we become a new person or creature. A vampire takes its victims blood, drains them, sometimes enslaving them and becoming a person's master, and can, by sharing its own blood, turn the victim into a vampire as well. Thus the person becomes a creature of the night.

Then, there is the eternal life aspect. After death Christians move on to heaven to be with God and Jesus in a new body and live forever. If a victim becomes a vampire then they 'live' forever in the undead state, draining blood themselves.

And let's not forget the importance of a cross. Jesus died on it to redeem humanity. A vampire is terrified of it.

The biggest difference is that vampires can be killed by being beheaded, a stake driven through their heart, and in later years, silver bullets or anything made from it. Not to mention the creatures sleep in their coffins, never actually escaping their grave as Christ did.

And a vampire chooses its victim, while we chose to come to Christ, even though he already knows we will.

Not to mention the seductive mystique of the vampire. At least in modern day. It has not always been so throughout history.

Christ on the other hand is warm and loving, inviting all to come to him. Although in some countries, becoming a Christian is a potential death sentence and becoming a martyr.

A vampire often kills its victims or those it has enslaved. And, often they are cruel.

Yet, there has been a rise of different sympathetic vampires like Barnabas Collins of Dark Shadows, Nicolas Knight in Forever Knight and let us not forget the current popular sparkling vamps.

The real difference is that Christ is life, and vampires are shrouded in death.

'Why Not Question' - What Christians could learn from the Science Fiction Community

There is a great deal Christians could learn from the Science Fiction community. Yikes! Christians fleeing in many directions of the mere mention of Science Fiction.
Ahhh! Save us from that unGodly thinking.

Oh, come on now. There are Science Fiction fans in many churches. It just isn't talked about because of this very reaction. Why set one's self up for condemnation?

However, the original comment stands. There is much Christians could learn from this tight knit and very open community.

What you ask? What could unbelievers possibly teach us?

Ever been to a Science Fiction convention? Answer is probably no, but please, bear with the blogger.

To begin with a convention, or con as it's normally called, is a huge family reunion. Most in these circles, and there are many sub genres, only see each other once maybe twice a year. It is a time to catch up on each others lives, the things one wouldn't post on Facebook, go out to eat together, see out of town friends, and engage in activities mutually enjoyed, example, gaming, filking,(SF folk singing), talking with authors or artists, viewing art, buying new stuff in the dealer's room, hanging out in the Con suite where free food is served, making new friends because everyone there is attending for the same reason and have a common interest, not to mention all the hugs exchanged. They're family.

Unfortunately, in many churches, people do not feel so welcomed. Yes, there are small groups as in the SF circles. Yes, everyone attending church has the same reason for being there and a common interest.

But today, everyone in church seems to be so busy they don't get involved in each others lives. They rush in for the service and rush out, maybe saying a quick 'Hi', before leaving to get the family home, fed and in front of the TV for the football game or to get the homework completed.

Rarely do Christians seem to take the time to get to know each other, hang out, talk, go eat together, or do anything that is common during a Con.

After all, Christians are all part of God's family yet seem to treat each other as perfect strangers and content to stay the way. No, it's not way in every church, but in the larger ones, it's the norm. One can go to church, sit in a pew, be preached at and leave, without ever speaking to anyone else.

This is unfortunate and part of what is wrong with churches/Christians today. How can a secular group have it so right and God's people so wrong?

'Why Not Question' - A Day of Rest

In Genesis the Bible tells us that on the seventh day God rested. Old Testament law required rest on the Sabbath with specific instruction on what type of work was allowed or how far someone could travel. With good reason, God's people worked hard the other six. Anyone who is familiar with life on the farm can appreciate the difficulty of this type of life style and the need to rest.

Today - God's people seem to have forgotten the principle and importance of rest. Often on Monday morning one hears stories about running around to various childrens' sporting events, running errands, cleaning the house, attending church for those who do and then it's Sunday evening and time to prepare for work the next morning.

When did they rest? They are as tired on Monday morning as they were on Friday evening.

However, there is a growing movement back toward a day of rest. Some take Saturday off, others Sunday. Many sign off their computer for one day or two. They don't allow their children to play computer/video games. They plan family activities or maybe indulge in hobbies or watch movies, there are those who don't even allow latter, take walks, read, or whatever they need to do in order to relax and 'rest'.

This is a life style change. The difference it makes in the productivity and attitude of those who practice a day of rest is astounding. Is it easy? No. In this culture people are very used to 'doing' all the time and constantly being 'connected' and knowing what is going on in their friends and family's lives or the current football score or whatever.

However, if God rested on the seventh day and had it included in the law, how can we, as modern day Christians, disregard a basic principle that is for our good?

'Why Not Question' - The Changing Church

The Internet, TV and the rush-rush of daily life has changed what 'Church' is today. Most of the more conservative or traditionalists still think of it as gathering in a particular building with other people on Sunday morning and/or evening and Wednesday Bible studies. Not to mention belonging to a certain denomination.

Nowadays however, several factors have changed that concept.

First, TV. Now those who are shut in or who have limited time and can't spend all Sunday morning in one spot, can watch the TV pastor of their choice for maybe thirty minutes or an hour and then move on to other things. Or, if they have time on Thursday evening, or Tuesday, they don't have to wait until Sunday. Church in this manner also allows for different types of teachers so they don't get convinced that only one thought pattern or belief system is the right one.

Second, the Internet. There are numerous sites where Christians can network together and have a 'church' of online believers. Also, many churches are starting to live stream their services so that a member does not have to leave their home to attend. This is a very handy in the event the roads are slick or it's snowing or illness.

Third, there are others who have gotten over the idea that a church building is necessary. Instead of expecting people to come to them, they go to the people and have services in office buildings during lunch breaks, on the street, or in homes. This is a return to the original concept of what was going on in the First Century church when believers met daily and in homes.

Each of these new methods, and the above list is by no means exhaustive, shows progressive thinking and a willingness to move out of traditional ideas into a new century where people have limited time and want more from their church than the same old - same old.

Bravo!

'Why Not Question' : 'It's Supernatural' with Sid Roth

There's a TV show that has been on the air for a number of years called 'It's Supernatural' hosted by Sid Roth. What is amazing about it is that they confirm everything a guest says by making phone calls to those they helped or some other method. This in and of itself gives credence to the amazing miraculous events of God that are happening every day.

For instance:

Imagine following Biblical principles that allow you to get out of debt and stay out of debt for the rest of your life, including paying cash for a new car, a new home, or any other expense.

Does God still raise people from the dead today? They do according to a gentlemen in Africa and a born again ex-Muslim.

People are growing new bones in their legs, getting out of wheel chairs and dancing - wouldn't that be something to see!

These are just a few examples of the Supernatural things God is doing not just in places like Africa, but right here in the United States!

'It's Supernatural' is shown on several Christian networks. Tune in and discover what it's like to naturally in the supernatural.

'Why Not Question' - Book Review : '23 Minutes in Hell' by Bill Wiese

'23 Minutes in Hell' shares the vivid experiences of Bill Wiese and his brief visit to the domain of Hell. For three chapters he shares the smells, images, pain, creatures and happenings of the dark evil place. The details are horrific and frightening and a clear image of what happens to unbelievers.

All in the all, the book is an excellent reference for those wanting to understand this horrible place and to share what he learned with the unsaved who scoff at the idea. Biblical references are provided as well along with the experiences of others who have made the journey into this fire filled underworld.

In fact, recently on 'It's Supernatural', a weekly show with Sid Roth and seen on many Christian stations, shared what happened to an ex-Muslim turned Christian brother. His sibling died, was in the morgue, and was raised from the dead by his believing relatives. The dead brother shared the torment he went through and was saved as a result.

The blogger will even share the brief encounter of hell - which happened in Walmart of all places. It was a glimpse of a cold, dark place filled with a terror that went straight into the bones. The experience has been shared with many.

Have you, the reader, had such an experience? Want to share? Please comment!

'Why Not Question' - Book Review : '90 Minutes in Heaven' by Don Piper w/Cecil Murphy

'90 Minutes in Heaven' is a compelling story telling of the death of Don Piper on the fateful day of January 18, 1989. He died in a car accident and was declared dead on the scene. A Baptist preacher showed up, asked to allowed to pray for the dead one, and despite the 'you've got to be kidding' looks from the EMT's, followed God's instructions. As the pastor said he prayed in a manner he had never before done and hasn't since.

Don Piper returned to life. Much to everyone's shock.

The rest of the book tells of his experiences and the long, slow recovery process. However, he does briefly share what heaven was like. Most of what he remembers is praise music and moving to the gates with those who had come to escort him there. Don Piper says there are no human words to describe what he experienced.

An excellent read but somewhat disappointing due to the lack of description of Heaven as the title promises. However, it does show the healing power of God and how by following revelation in the instance of raising Don from the dead, miraculous things can still happen today. They're not all confined to New Testament days and 'over and done with' as many are taught in churches today.

'Why Not Question' - The Ark of the Convenant - Where is it?

It seems quite strange that the Ark of the Covenant, something so central to the Jewish faith, would simply vanish. There is a great deal of speculation from various researchers and hunters about where it finally ended it. Each has compelling evidence to support their claims, but none have yet found the Ark. All that is really known is that it was removed from the temple and has disappeared from modern day.

Here are some are the theories:

The first suggests the Ark was removed and hidden in the passages below the temple mount where it waits to be rediscovered when the world one more needs it.

A second theory is that it was found during the crusades and removed from Holy Land. It was taken to a temple, then moved again, and possibly resides in a sealed area under the floor of an English cathedral.

The third and most compelling, is that it is currently in a stone church in Ethiopia. Only the high priest is allowed in and no outside researchers have been allowed inside to verify the claim. Several interesting points seem to substantiate the claim. The appointed priest often goes blind and only serves a short term before death. Also, the people of the country have celebrations, with their own copies of the Ark in attendance. It is the only place in the world where this happens.

Whether or not the Ark of the Covenant still exists, or, as some historians are beginning to question, it even existed at all, is a matter of much speculation and research. Many spend their lives trying to find it. Yet, the greatest symbol of the Jewish faith has vanished from history, perhaps never to be found again.

(Information shared here comes from several recent documentaries on Syfy and National Geographic channels.)

'Why Not Question' - Jeremiah 29:11 - What does this verse really say?

Of late this verse has been quoted many times. Question is, is the translation being used correct or are there parts being left out? This week's study is on Jeremiah 29:11.

KJV :For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

NIA : For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Amplified : For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace, and not for evil, to give you hope in the final outcome.

NAS : For I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.

Let's take this verse apart now. (KJV)

For I know (yada - root: to know) the thoughts (machashebeth- contrivance, intention or plan)that I think (chashab - regard, value, compute) toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts (machashebeth) of peace (shalom - be safe or complete), and not of evil (ra - bad) to give (nathan - literally to give)you an expected (tiqvah - expectancy) end (acharith - latter end, hinder part, prosterity, future).

Now, let's put this together in a literal translation:

For I know the contrivance, intention, or plan that I regard, value or compute for you, said the Lord, contrivance, intention or a plan to be safe or complete and not bad, to give you an expectancy for the latter end, hinder part, prosterity or future.

It is also interesting that the verse is taken out of context. When reading the verses before and after, one learns that the Lord was speaking to the those being held captive in Babylon. He tells them they will call upon Him, He will hear, and He will gather them back together once more as a nation.

Is this a verse that is a promise to believers today? Or a promise that has already been fulfilled and is for the modern Christian's learning only?

You, the reader, decide.

'Why Not Question' - Book Review: 'Whisper A Scream' by Peter Turner

'Whisper a Scream' by newcomer Pete Turner reads like a descent into madness with a spiritual twist. At the end the reader learns it was all a dream? Or was it?

The book has a very promising beginning with a dark spirit entering a revival meeting and continues through the finding of a mysterious box in an underground vault. By the end the reader discovers that the entire thing was perhaps a drug induced delusion while in the hospital. Or was it when the evil thing taps on the window?

With the way it is written if is difficult for the reader to connect with the main character and at times it is rather hard to understand what is really going on.
However, since the Christian horror genre is in short supply - the book is recommended as a potential ground breaker outside of the well known Ted D.

Available on Amazon.

'Why Not Question' - Book Review : 'By Darkness Hid' by Jill Williamson

Despite not having yet finished reading 'By Darkness Hid' by Christy Award winner Jill Williamson, the blogger highly recommends the book.

It tells two stories of a young man and woman, both of whom are on journeys - one to be a squire and the other, poising as a boy with the friend of her mother's, to become an apprentice because the woman's husband does not know of the deception. Each has much to learn as they follow the new path set before them.

The story is well written, the world believable and the characters interesting. A great read for any who are fans of Fantasy.

'Why Not Question' - Book Review : 'Lord of the Rings' by J.R.R. Tolkien

The other 'Father' of Christian Science Fiction and Fantasy is J.R.R. Tolkien. His books 'The Hobbit', 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Silmanrillion' were greatly successful and credited with the rebirth of modern day fantasy. The classic stories remain popular to this day and have been read by millions worldwide.

Although the blogger has not read his works, they are highly recommended. However, it has been said the pace is ponderously slow, there seems to be tons of 'walking' in series, and rumor has it that LOTR was written to show of the Elf language Tolkien had invented.

He was also responsible for C.S. Lewis coming to know Christ and the two were friends as well as belonging to the same writing group called the Inklings.

Sources: Wikipedia & overhead comments from friends who have read the books.

Available on Amazon, Christian and secular bookstores.

'Why Not Question' - Book Review: 'The Chronicles of Narnia' by C.S. Lewis

One of the classics and written by one of the two 'fathers' of Christian Science Fiction and Fantasy is 'The Chronicles of Narnia' by C.S.Lewis.

Although the blogger has only read 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe', the series is highly recommended. The allegory and symbolism is obvious to any and all who know the story of Jesus in the form of Aslan, the great lion who makes a great sacrifice to save Edward from the wrath of the White Witch. Since she didn't really understand the ancient writing on the stone table, he is able to come back from the dead and save the day. Much like the Bible says, if the devil had really understood what Jesus dying on the cross had meant, he, the evil one, would never have allowed it to happen.

For any reading the books, the language is a bit dated and difficult to follow sometimes. Still, the basic story is excellent and must for both readers and writers of the Christian Speculative genre.

In order:
The Magicians Nephew
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
The Horse and his Boy
Prince Caspian
The Voyage of the Dawn Trader
The Silver Chair
The Last Battle

Available on Amazon and most Christian Bookstores.

'Why Not Question' - Book Review - 'The Worker Prince' by Bryan Thomas Schmidt

To be released October 4th, 2011, 'The Worker Prince' by Bryan Thomas Schmidt, uses the story of Moses to tell the adventures of Davi Rhii, a child saved from the murder of infants on a slave planet and raised in the palace as a prince.

The plot takes both familiar and unfamiliar twists. Davi finds his birth mother and cousin by accident, when he saves Nila from a solider trying to rape he. He kills the officer and is hunted for murder. Yet, the young prince discovers there is a rebellion that has been planned by the workers and his military training becomes crucial to its success.

There are many faith elements, including the workers belief in one God and their captors belief in many, just like the ancient Egyptians. The back story tells of a previous uprising, quelled by the ruthless leader, who thinks of the slaves as non humans. Although he tried to teach this to Davi, he fails because his sister chose to raise her son with more empathy for others.

Although a bit rough in a few places, the novel is an excellent read and this blogger highly recommends it. It is the first of a trilogy and the development of this story and writer hold much promise. The pace is well done, carries the reader through to the satisfying climax and ending.

Will be coming from the editors of Digital Dragon.

'Why Not Question' - Book Review - Left Behind Fanficiton

As previously mentioned in last week's blog, there official and unofficial series spin offs of the Left Behind series. What will be covered today, are two of the fanfiction stories posted on fanfiction.net.

They are Left Behind SG1 and Left Behind Stargate Atlantis.

Say what? Cross the Left Behind books with the Stargate TV shows?

Oh, yeah. And oddly enough, the crossover stories work very well. Originally started by ChristianGateFan with a parallel story written by Dragonlots, the two online fan novels have a following because, and get this, there is a need for faith based fanfiction.

Who would have guessed?

Left Behind SG1 follows the adventures of Jack O'Neill, Samantha Carter, Daniel Jackson and others from the beginning of the rapture to currently fifty seven months into the Tribulation. It is still a work in progress and has been taken over, with permission from ChristianGateFan, by Dragonlots.

Left Behind Stargate Atlantis begins two days before the rapture and goes all the way through to the final kingdom after the new Heaven and new Earth are created.
There are a number of prequel stories since the author discovered a number of holes in the story and added them to fill in the blanks. They are:

'Near Seduction' (Left Behind prequel & pre SGA); Dr. Elizabeth Weir meets Carpathia and is the only woman not successfully seduced by him.

'Christmas Stargate Style' (SG1/The Santa Clause); 'Christmas Stargate Atantis Style' (SGA/The Santa Clause 1 & 2); Two fun little stories adding to the relationships between various characters and use Rev. Larry Henry, who is very important in the Left Behind Stargate Atlantis novel.

'Halloween Dance' (SGA/SG1/MacGyver). Atlantis has a dance on Halloween, while Dr. Jeanie Miller sews the costume for her daughter and the Henry's make plans of their own.

'The Christmas Trip' (SGA/SG1). Stranded in the ghost town of Gilman, CO, Dr. McKay and Katie, John Sheppard and Teyla, all discover they have deeper feelings for each other than they thought.

The stories can be found at:

Left Behind SG1 - http://www.fanfiction.net/u/722434/

Left Behind Stargate Atlantis and prequels - http://www.fanfiction.net/u/171979/

Please note that the authors ARE NOT paid nor do they receive payment for fanfiction. These stories are done for fun and practice. Most studios don't mind because it keeps the fandoms alive and profits in their coffers.

There are more Left Behind fan fiction stories posted at www.fanfiction.net.

'Why Not Question" - Book Review - Left Behind Series by Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye

Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye put their combined knowledge and writing skills together to produce one of the most all time popular End Times novels, the 'Left Behind' series. Compelling and fun to read, the various titles embark on a journey through the Tribulation with well liked characters, a struggle against the AntiChrist, and the final glorious victory.

They are in order:
Left Behind
The Tribulation Force
Nicolae
Soul Harvest
Apollyon
Assassins
The Indwelling
The Mark
Desecration
The Remnant
Armageddon
Glorious Appearing

The Prequel series:
The Rising
The Regime
The Rapture

The Sequel:
Kingdom Come

Although the characters are somewhat cardboard and some angles not really developed, like Rayford courting Amanada, and several editorial oversights, for instance, if all the coastal cities flooded, what were our heroes doing living in a bunker in San Diego? - it is a good attempt to take the reader through the final days before Christ returns and sets up his thousand year reign. A great resource for those who want to have an idea on what will happen and to share it with their friends.

Available on Amazon.
There are official side series and couple of unofficial ones on Fanfiction.net.

'Why Not Question' - Book Review - 'The North Star Serial Part 1' by Bryan Thomas Schmidt

If you enjoy Space Opera then I highly recommend 'The North Star Serial Part 1' by Bryan Thomas Schmidt.

Captain Janaai Resnick takes command of the Destroyer North Star and begins her military career. The fight against a race called the Korleans who feel that ancient missionaries wronged them and tried to destroy their culture. Included as part of the series of short stories as those about the enemy themselves and their motivations in the war they began.

Most moving are two stories 'The Orphaning' and 'The Scout' since they depict a massacre and the real life reaction of someone who lost his entire family -rather than the typical 'I forgive you' unrealistic depiction often used in Christian fiction. Kudos for the writer being brave enough to deflect away from tradition and show how a person, Christian or not, would behave because of such a loss.

Also included are the first chapter of two novels, 'The Worker Prince' which has been sold to a publisher and 'The Sandman'. Both show great promise as Christian Science Fiction and the blogger urges fans of this genre to carefully watch Bryan Thomas Schmidt as an up and coming writer.

Reviewed book available on Amazon.

'Why Not Question' - Book Review - 'Solar Flare' by Larry Burkett

A little known by very good Christian Speculative novel is 'Solar Flare' by Larry Burkett. The story involves a professor who predicts, correctly, that a massive solar flare will end life as we know it in a few short days. It disrupts the current electronic society, grounds all aircraft and forces human kind back into a more primitive state. It disrupts lives and causes many to question their faith.

Classified a thriller, it is a Science Fiction as well, at its very best. It has all the ingredients for a classic disaster and the aftermath fall out. Highly recommended!

Available on Amazon.

'Why Not Question' - Book Review - 'Starfire' by Stuart Vaughn Stockton

Meet Stuart Vaughn Stockton. He wrote a book called 'Starfire'. His characters are dinosaurs. Yes, that's right, there isn't a human anywhere in the novel.

Rathe goes on a quest with the rest of his military group, infiltrating the enemy and seeking out an ancient device that legend says, will destroy their world. Are the old stories true? Has their continual war caused them to lose much of their technology? And who is this mysterious prophet who told Rathe his is a unique destiny?

A bit slow to start but once into the novel it's a page turner the reader won't want to put down. Perfect for those who enjoy military Science Fiction. Perfect for both the secular and Christian markets. Available from Marcher Lord Press and Amazon.

'Why Not Question' - Book Review - 'Alpha Redemption' by P.A. Baines

In the tradition of Asimov and Clarke but with a Christian twist, the author raises the question if AI computer can know Christ and what would it do to protect its human passenger - who is aging backwards.

The book is a marvelous mixture of present and past story line, telling this tale in a unique and different way. The journey is from Earth to a distant world and back again. The Theory of Relativity is brought into play and the blogger can't wait to read the sequel!

'Alpha Redemption' by P.A. Baines from Splashdown Books and Amazon.

'Why Not Question' - Book Review - 'Winter Awakening' by Dana Bell

Welcome to the summer of Christian Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror book reviews. In the weeks following this blogger will suggest titles for reading around the pool, while traveling in the car, relaxing in the hotel, or wherever there might be a few moments and the vacationer needs something to fill the time.

So sit back, relax, and read about the first book.

Every wish you could sit down and talk to your cat?

Word Warrior lives in a world covered in snow and ice. The only acceptable future for a male is to challenge and impregnate females. However, he wants more and learns to read the ancient human language. It makes him a desirable mate.

In the meantime, strange things are happening with the wolves who once hunted them and odd, zig-zag tracks are being left outside the school where Word Warrior has chosen to live. Is this some new monster come to threaten them? Or have the dreaded humans returned?

Dana Bell wrote the first version of 'Winter Awakening' during her final semester in college. It evolved from a short story into a novel and was eventually bought by Wolfsinger Publications. It is available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Smashwords.

'Why Not Question' - Ephesians - Men in Marriage Part 3

Now, our final verses about marriage from Ephesians. V 31-33 (KJV)

For his cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and the two shall be one flesh.

This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

Cause - anti toutou - 'for this cause' signifying the principle or motive (Vines, P 92. Leave - (Greek word has letters not available on modern keyboards) means to leave down, behind, utterly. Shall - fulfill a promise (according to the dictionary. joined - to be joined or join self to. Second shall is a future tense. It takes time for a couple to become alike. It can be more easily seen in those who have been together fifty plus years. They mirror each other in words, gestures, etc. Flesh again is skin.

The great mystery I won't go into during this blog. It takes time to understand the full impact of the reference.

Love, is the same one in previous verses. Reverence here means - in awe.

So finally, a man is to leave his parents behind, join himself to his wife, and eventually, they will become 'one flesh' or mirror each other. It will be like the Great Mystery of Christ and his church and finally, the man is again told to love his wife as himself and for the wife to be in awe of her husband.

Interesting how the man got more instruction on how to treat his wife, huh?

"Why Not Question' - Ephesians - Men in Marriage Part 2

Okay, how else are men to love their wives? Let's continue in Ephesians.

28-30 (KJV)

So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church.

For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

The word for love and loveth is agapao, which was covered in the last blog. bodies is soma - also covered in the previous blog. Or literally, self.

Flesh in the following verse is sarx - literally flesh, skin. Nourisheth - ektrepho - train to maturity, cherisheth - thalpo - foster.

Final verse, members - ie limb, flesh - skin, bones - osteon - literally bones.

So, given the definition of the words, a husband is to unconditionally love, as does God, his wife's body, as the man loves his own because a man is going to take care of his body or flesh, train it to maturity and foster himself. Implied is that the man is do the same for his wife.

And that we are all part of Christ's body or limbs, skin and bones - so our marriages should mirror this truth.

Kind of mind blowing when you thing about it, huh?

'Why Not Question' - Ephesians - Men in Marriage Part 1

Now, let's begin to talk about what husbands are supposed to do.

Eph. 25-27
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.

That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.

That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

Notice the first thing they're commanded to do is love their wives. The word is agapao meaning - expresses the deep and constant love and interest of a Being towards entirely unworthy objects, producing and fostering a reverential love in them towards the Giver. (Vine's complete Expository Dictionary. P. 382.)It is used in reference to loving God and He loving us in return. Whoaa! And this is how a husband is to love his wife.

Next, the husband is to sanctify (hagiazo - purify or consecrate) and cleanse (katharizo - purge, purify) it with washing (loutron - baptism) of water (hudor - literal or figurative) by the word.(rhema - spoken or written words.)

Last so can present (paristemi- stand beside, exhibit, recommend, aid,) it to himself a glorious (endoxos -gorgeous, honorable)church, not having a spot (spotless - stain), or wrinkle (rhutis - wrinkle on face), or any other such thing (toioutos - of this kind or sort); but it should be holy and without blemish (smomos - spotless, blameless).

Ouch! Talk about a tall order for men! They must love their wives unconditionally and like God loves them. They must speak or write to their spouses with pure words so they can present or exhibit their gorgeous wives with no blemishes of any kind before the Lord.

And that's just the beginning!

'Why Not Question' - Ephesians - Women in Marriage

Every get tired of preachers stopping at this point?

Eph. 5:22-24. (KJV) Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

Why is that they never go on to say what the husbands are to do? Hmmmm. In the next few weeks we'll be covering those verses as well. But first, let's take a look at what these verses say.

Wives, submit (hupotasso - military term, to rank under, be under obedience)yourselves unto your own husbands (Now, that phrase makes one wonder. Were wives not doing that and obeying only other women's husbands?), as unto the Lord. (Don't we all do that since we've accepted him into our hearts as Lord of our life.)

For the husband is the head (Kephale - authority)of the wife, even as Christ is the head (Kephale - authority)of the church: and he is the savior of the body (soma - 'the body as a whole, the instrument of life'.)

Therefore as the church is subject (hupotasso - military term, to rank under, be under obedience)unto Christ, so let the wives bet to their own husbands in every thing.(Pas - daily, whole, manner of.)

Sounds depressing doesn't it? These verses conflict with everything we're taught in our society about the role of women. Taken out of context, it makes it sound like our husbands are to unquestioned kings and rule over us.

NOT SO!

Next week, we're going to cover how husbands are supposed to treat their wives, and you know what? They're given more instructions then women are!

Why Not Question - 'Facing the Giants' Failure?

Before the marriage series begins, I want to share something that is timely, considering the millions who are seeking employment in the current depressed economy.

In March 2009 I was laid off from my job. I was the best worker they'd had in the position, but when things became difficult financially, I was among the one third in the company who lost their job. For me, it was a blessing in disguise. I hadn't been happy there for several months. Plus, I'd originally taken it as a matter or survival - not a career move. A not uncommon place I'd found myself over the years.

However, in the days that followed I felt discarded. Like all their praise and excellent reviews I'd gotten meant nothing. The almighty dollar had won out.

So, almost every night I watched 'Facing the Giants'. I know. I've discussed this film before. However, it helped me through a difficult time in my life knowing that no matter what, no matter how bleak it got, God was still in control. I would love Him despite the economic loss I'd suffered.

As it turned out, my belief it was a blessing in disguise was true. I was exhausted. I'd been doing the work of three people and was burnt out. Granted, I felt a bit lost at first since I wasn't used to having time at home, but I filled it with job hunting in the morning, writing, reading or burying myself in hobbies during the afternoon. I even went on to make a life for myself by joining a local writer's group and other activities.

It was also good for my marriage. I no longer resented spending time with my spouse as I did when I had limited time due to my job. I could drop everything, enjoy being together, and not have my mind dwelling on the dozen things that needed to be done at home.

I also started my writing career and now have several stories published along with my first book.

Now, I have another 'giant' in my life to vanquish. I recently went back to work full-time. It's not a great job. The pay is low, there's no where to advance and what my employer is calling 'opportunity' is just cross training. It's another survival job. Nothing more. Nothing less.

And I'm really tired of survival jobs. I'd been forced into this position far too often. I normally either work in retail, an industry that doesn't treat the employees well and customers abuse them. Or file/mail rooms. What happens is the employer promises there's room for advancement, but once they hire me the tale is - 'Oh, didn't we tell you, we need someone to stay in that position for awhile.'
Bye bye any hopes of a bettering myself anywhere in the company.

Unfortunately, employers look at my resume and all they see is a file/mail clerk or someone who belongs in retail. They have blinders on when looking at my education - I have a BA. I've tutored children in Reading and Math. I'm an excellent trainer and I have outstanding written and verbal communications skills. (sigh)

What am I doing once more? Reading the novelization of 'Facing the Giants' by Eric Wilson. Once I finish it, I will again watch the movie.

It will help me face the giant of 'Failure' who is staring into my eyes.

In my opinion - that is all my working career has ever been.

Will God make something good of it? I certainly hope so. Although, right now, I don't see how. What possible good can come from continual grunt jobs? Other than financial. If that is all they've been, then I've certainly wasted my time. I'll just have to wait and see.

Why Not Question - 'Fireproof'

This bring us to the last Christian film in this series and a lead in to our next topic - marriage.

Yep, that's right, the movie is 'Fireproof'.

Now, when this came out, the secular world screamed 'why did they need a movie to teach us how to be married?' Answer, put so beautifully by one of the secondary characters, 'You have to lead your heart.', something the secular world does not seem to understand.

Staying in love is a conscious choice. Everyday you have to remind yourself why you love the other person and not just look at their shortcomings and think, 'there has to be someone better out there.'

God made marriage for life.

You never leave your partner behind.

Take the love dare.

Why Not Question : 'The Passion of the Christ'

'The Passion of the Christ' was a controversial film when it was released. The common complaint was that it was violent and bloody. The real problem is that the Western World had sanitized Jesus' death on the cross and events leading up to it. The honest truth is that Mel Gibson, the director, didn't push it as far as the actual reality.
If he had, it would have been completely unwatchable.

It is a powerful film recommended for everyone. It shows the price paid for salvation and how grateful everyone should be because of Jesus' sacrifice. Definitely the perfect movie to watch just before Easter.

Why Not Question : More recommended Christian films

For a number of reasons the series on Christian films will be carried through out April and the new series on Marriage will begin in May.

So, this week, is a mixture of recommended films.

'Deceived.'Cloud Ten Pictures. Sort of Science Fiction combined with the seven deadly sins. A signal from outer space, the military trying to keep it quiet, and the scientists wanting to share it. Yet, what is the real truth?

'The Gospel'. Sony Pictures. A wonderful musical and heart warming plot line with the prodigal son returning home. Lots of worship dance, singing, and an excellent cast.

'Joshua'. Epiphany Films. How would you react if you saw a man walking down the street easily carrying a log? Who is he and where did he come from? Would you believe the answer when he told you?

'The Miracle of the Cards'. Cloud Ten Pictures. Based on a true story. 1.3 Million get well cards - a Guinness World Record. A young boy with brain cancer experiences several miraculous events because of his mother's faith and drive to save his life.

'Man of Miracles'. Synchronicity Productions. Was it an angel who saved a preacher's life? And why?

'The Second Chance'. Triumph Films. Starring Michael W. Smith. Ethan Jenkins (Smith) is sent by the Elders of his church to work in their sister branch. He learns about hope and how to restore it in a desperate area of town. The final scene alone is worth watching this film.

'The Wager'. Pure Flix Entertainment. Loosely based on the book of Job a singer finds his life suddenly upset by a series of strange circumstances almost as if there was a wager on what how he'd react and whether or not his faith would remain strong.

'Waterproof'. Cloud Ten Pictures. Starring Burt Reynolds. A shopkeeper is shot and then abducted by the shooter's mother. She takes him home to her family in a small southern town with their own secrets to resolve.

Why Not Question - Disaster films

Oddly enough, one of the Christian stores I frequented carried disaster films. I wondered why until I viewed them. They had no cuss words. They were centered on family triumphing over circumstances. And they made by Porchlight Entertainment.

Yes, I'm one of those who watches credits to find out who the background people are. It's the best way to discover who makes good films and who doesn't.

Besides, it's fun to see how many ways the world can be destroyed.

I only have short list for Porchlight, but I highly recommend their films.

Combustion - gas is igniting under the city. Stars Joe Lando.

Killer Flood: The Day the Dam Broke. Joe Lando, Michele Greene, Bruce Boxleitner. Nice reconciliation with a divorced couple and their child.

Trapped Buried Alive. Avalanche traps a mother with her step daughter in an ski inn while the father safe outside works at saving them.

Megafault. This aired on Syfy. It is wonderful because the scientist is a woman instead of a man and she's trying to get home to her family in Denver. Great sidekick who really makes this a 'must see' film.

Two others I discovered made my Faith Films and distributed by Echo Bridge Home Entertainment - the latter one of my favorites for odd and fun movies:

The Apocalyspe - An asteroid is about to destroy the Earth and a couple desperately tries to reach their daughter. The only not so good thing about this film is that the rapture also happens, but not for everyone at once and seems to be based more on their faith than salavation.

2012: Doomsday - Stars Dale Midkiff. Several strangers end up going to an ancient temple in Mexico on December 21st, 2012. Premise is weak but lots of nice scenery. Also, the rapture happens, but there are some loop holes that don't fit. Ending is unfulfilling.

Others I recommend but are not by this studio. Some have strong language:

Nature Unleashed: Earthquake. Set in Russia with a family caught in a subway about to be flooded. Fairly decent.

The Day After Tomorrow : Great example of sacrifice and family values despite the main couple being divorced. Not to mention the unrealistic wolf scenes.

Independence Day - Technically also Science Fiction. Aliens destroy the planet. Great family scenes and reconciliation for one couple.

Absolute Zero - Another take on the planet plunging into an ice age. Some silly scenes but the main character saves his family.

Volcano - Not really believable but Tommy Lee Jones is wonderful and there's great interplay with his character's daughter.

When Worlds Collide - this is an older film based on a book. They build an arc to escape to a planet about to destroy the Earth. Well done adaption. One of the classics. Science Fiction.

Deep Impact - Asteroid impacts the Earth. Good family scenes but there are a number of suicides.

Category 6: Day of Destruction & Catatore 7: The end of the World.
All star casts and interesting character interplay. Both are four hours each.

10.5 and 10.5 Apocalypse - these films are good because no matter how they tried to stop the earthquake, the planet won out in the end and people had to deal with the aftermath. The only films that show mankind can't stop everything.

2012 - Very good family stuff in this one despite a lousy script and silly premise.

Supernova - shown on Hallmark. Kind of lacking in many areas and the whole convict out to get the family was a bit much.

2012 Supernova - I like Brain Krause, but this film had such an unbelievable ending I wouldn't watch it again.

Ice Twisters - SyFy film. Okay. I have to say I like this one and I'm really sure why. It has a silly premise, but the male lead, a writer, keeps it interesting.

Nature Unleashed: Avalanche - A so - so film. Filmed in Russia with a very interesting idea on how the village survives.

Nature Unleashed: Fire - Silly premise with the way they solve the problem. Just fun to watch because it's so unbelievable.

There are many more movies if you enjoy these type of films.

Why Not Question - Rapture Speculation Films

Ah, the rapture and those left behind. A popular theme with many writers through the years. There is much speculation on how, when, and what the results will be, not only in Christian written fiction but also in films. The most recent popular version was the Left Behind series. There are many others, but to quote Kirk Cameron when he was filming the first film - 'This could happen now.'

And it could. Are you ready?

Below is a list of some, but not all the films made on this theme.

Left Behind
Left Behind II : Tribulation Force
Left Behind : World at War

The three films don't go beyond the second book. The written series, which I've read all of, was interesting, sometimes preachy and there are a number of 'oops'. There are also a few spin off series by other writers.

There is fanfiction written of this series on www.fanfiction.net. Check out the concurrent series crossed with Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis by writers dragonlots and ChristianGateFan plus many others.

Apocalypse
Revelation
Tribulation
Judgement

The first and fourth films are the best. The other two are okay despite some of the well known actors and actresses in them.

In the Blink of an Eye - Interesting twist using a man caught in a time loop.

The Omega Code
Megiddo : The Omega Code 2

These two films were made for a secular audience. However, the special affects near the end of the second make this pair a 'must see'.

Why Not Question - Christian Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films?

Science Fiction is very frightening in Christian circles. Oh, they know there's a huge market for it, but most are afraid to touch it either in book or film forms. Yet, both the works of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, the fathers of Christian Speculative fiction, have been adapted to film.

Let's talk about 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'. In the scene where Susan and Lucy watch as the witch torments and then kills Aslan, the viewer gets a hint of what if was like for Christ when he was mocked, beaten, had a thorn crown thrust upon his head, and then was forced to carry his own cross to be crucified on. Aslan is shaved, bound, and made fun of by the creatures who follow the White Witch.

Also, if one really examines the image shown, more deep truths present themselves - Christ's death was one of the biggest devil spirit parties in history. They thought they had won. They defeated God's plan - just like the White Witch thought she had, until Aslan returned restored - just as Christ did.

And, when watching the marriage scene in the extended version of 'Return of the King', the scene drips with symbolism. In it can be seen the wedding ceremony of Christ and his bride, the blooming tree of Life and many more than can be named.

So, is Science Fiction and Fantasy in Christian form really that frightening? Not when you see the path paved by the two who came before. Interesting part, the Lord of Rings trilogy was done by fan who might not even be a Christian, yet the director caught the true intent of the writer.

Recommended Christian Fantasy:
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Prince Caspain
Journey of the Dawn Trader (blogger has not yet seen the film)

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy - either original theater release or extended versions.

Horror:
Invisible Enemies - a pair of glasses allows a young man to see the demons all around us.

Science Fiction:
Unidentified - Two journalists, one Christian, one not, investigate reports on UFO's.
Time Changer - Time travel adventure. A bit preachy but interesting.

NOTE: Keep an eye on Christian Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror writers. God is opening doors big time for publication, both through Christian and secular houses.

Christian small press publishers : Marcher Lord Press & Splash Down Books plus a few others.

Why Not Question - Christian Romance Films

I discovered the Love Comes Softly series on Hallmark with the fifth film. It remains my favorite out of the seven. Why? Because it has everything. A lonely widow who comes to town to become the teacher after her husband's death. She and her young son move into a not too well cared for house. A young girl is taken in by our widow from the orphan trains they used to run from the big cities in an attempt to find homes for the children living on the streets. A sheriff who fell in love with the widow and who searches for the girl and her brother, placed in a abusive situation, when they run away. They're found through a simple act of faith - prayer - during a cold, pitch black and stormy night.

From there I went on to discover the rest of the series and purchase them as they come out. Why you ask? Because, unlike many woman who read or watch romances, I prefer nice, wholesome stories with no smut. Oh, I've read the sexy, steamy books. Don't think I haven't. But when it becomes the focus of the story instead of the relationship between the characters, I got tired of them. I much prefer a couple getting together with a common faith in God.

So, I moved on to Christian romances. The stories are interesting. I care about the characters. And often, they're well written or acted with the most physical intimacy being a kiss or holding hands. Sex is for after marriage - as it should be.

Quick update - Hallmark via FB has announced they are running two prequel movies on their channel to the Love Comes Softly series.

My list of Christian 'must see' romantic movies:

Love Comes Softly
Love's Enduring Promise
Love's Long Journey
Love's Abiding Joy
Love's Unending Legacy
Love's Unfolding Dream
Love Takes Wing
Love Finds a Home

Saving Sarah Cain
For those who enjoy Amish Stories.
Based on the book by Beverly Lewis.

Hidden Places
Set during the Great Depression.
From the book by Lynn Austin.

For those who like Biblical stories:
One Night with the King

The Bible Stories : Esther

Esther and the King - 1960

The Story of Ruth - an older film
There is a newer one but it is not as well done.

Why Not Question - 'Facing the Giants' - 'Bloom Where you're Planted'.

For a few weeks we're going to divert from studying Eastern culture to understand the Bible. Instead, the following brief series will be on Christian produced, acted or supported movies.

Today's film - 'Facing the Giants'.

"Bloom where you're planted."

This is an alien concept to many Americans. We're always looking off to horizon waiting for our big break or thinking the best job or opportunity we've been wanting is somewhere else.

Shannon Fields, who has the female lead in this film, told the story of how God put on her heart to become an actress but never opened a door to move to any place where she could make this dream come true. She just couldn't see how an opportunity could happen in the small town where she lived.

Then, something amazing happened. The Kendrick brothers wrote and decided to produce a Christian movie. She auditioned and won the part she played.

Now who would have ever thought that in small town in Georgia a film would be made.

Shannon never had. Yet, 'Facing the Giants' was the first stepping stone to fulfilling her dream to become an actress. Now she has moved to a larger town, still teaches and coaches the cheer leading team and takes acting classes.

More recently, she had a role in 'Suing the Devil'.

So, from this one example we can see how God can take an impossible situation and allow you to 'Bloom where you're planted'.

(Information shared about Shannon Fields from a talk she gave at Jubilee Fellowship Church a number of years back and from Facebook.)

Why Not Question - 'One Night with the King' - Recommended

'One Night with the King' is a well done movie and highly recommended for those who love the story of Esther. Not only does it show the love shared between the king and queen, but also the customs of the time and the constant threats against the Persian ruler's life. A poisoning attempt was over heard by Mordecai and passed on saving Ahasuerus from certain death.

The protrayal of Esther is well done and shows the heart of the young woman as shown in the Bible. She wins favor with the eunuchs, is favored with a special robe when she goes to the king, and wins the crown of Persia.

Now, much of what goes on the film is lost on the Western audience as the customs are not really understood. For instance, the comment that the women would be allowed to keep their jewelry. It is one of the few things that Eastern women are permitted to own. No doubt they were traded for special favors or items.

Also, the time of purification where the women who were to go into the king spent learning the manners of the court and being bathed so that their skin was soft and scented and therefore pleasurable to the king.

One thing that is not mentioned but shown is the King's quick temper. Historically, this is noted. His anger cost many their lives. This made Esther's position very dangerous and she knew it. This little known fact magnifies the courage of a woman destined to save her people for certain death.

There are many more events shown in the film that help the Western mind understand the culture.

Final word. See the film.

Why Not Question - Why was Elizabeth's lineage so important?

A lot of time has been spent using word studies to better understand the Bible and posing questions which can be answered by using the technique. Now, it is time to cover some of the Biblical customs of the day to better understand scriptures.

Luke 1:5 KJV

There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia; and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.

Notice the importance made of Elizabeth by saying she was a daughter of Aaron. Ever wonder why?

From 'Manners and Customs of the Bible' by James M. Freeman

'Great care was taken in the selection of wives for the Jewish priests, so that the line of the priests might be kept in every respect unsulled. "It was lawful lawful for a priest to marry a Levitess, or indeed, a daughter of Israel; but is was most commendable of all to marry one of the priests' line." Zacharias was specially honored in having his wife one of the descendants of Aaron.'

Interesting to see that the mother of John, the one who proclaimed Christ's coming, was a direct descendant of Aaron, brother of Moses and the voice for his brother before pharoah. How fitting the role should be repeated with the coming of Christ.

Why Not Question - What is the Behemoth in Job?

Job 40:15 KJV Behold now behemoth (a large beast), which I made (bring forth, to do) with thee; he eateth grass (grass, hay, herb, leek) as an ox.

There is much speculation as to what the behemoth is in this verse. The more conservative say it is an elephant or hippopotamus. Others say a crocodile. There has even been those who say it is a dinosaur.

However, when the entire description is put together, another beast rises that has not even been considered. In Job 40:15-18 & 41:14-31 there is more description of this creature.

Strength is in the loins and navel of the belly - moves the tail like a cedar - which is a very big tree - sinews of his stones are wrapped together - bones strong as brass - bones like bars of iron

scales shut up together with a close seal - teeth are terrible - big eyes-
burning lamps come out of his mouth - sparks of fire leap out - does this sound like an elephant or hippo? out of the nostrils comes smoke like a seething pot or kettle - breath kindles flame - and flame comes out of his mouth - now what creature in mythology does this?

flakes of his flesh is joined together - heart firm as stone - when he raises up the mighty are afraid - sword against him can't hold - nor any other weapon - they're easily broken - makes the water boil -

And in verse 33 - Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear.

Hmmm, putting together all the pieces suggests that the behemoth of Job is actually a Sea Serpent or Dragon. Which raises another question particularly the fear those of the Middle Ages had of the beasts - were they actually once real and hunted to extinction?

The verses in Job seem to suggest that the creatures actually existed.

Side note - in a documentary there is mention of a writing from someone during the middle ages who gave such an in depth description of the anatomy of a dragon that the person must have had an actual carcass to study.

Why Not Question: Do pets go to heaven?

There is a great deal of speculation as to whether or not pets go to heaven and are later reunited with their owners. Since there is no Biblical basis for the answer, the writer of this blog will share a personal experience.

Acts 2:17 KJV And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh: and you sons and your daughters shall prophesy(publicly expound), and your young men shall see visions (act of seeing, sight, inspired appearance) , and you old men shall dream (happens in sleep, frequently) dreams.

Galations 3:28c KJV ...there is neither male nor female; for ye are all one (literally one) in Christ Jesus.

Now the reason these two verses are shared is that first, Acts 2:17 says that God's people will have visions and dream dreams. It also specifies men, however, since we are all are one in Christ Jesus, this includes women as well. Now, it has to understood that in Paul's time, men normally were the ones who led. God has made exceptions to this with a woman judge -Deborah and with Esther the queen saving her people, so we can see God will use whomever is needed at the time.

That being said, here is what the blogger is sharing about pets going to heaven based on believers ability to have visions - the act of seeing.

L.O. died when she was 19. I had had her for seventeen years. I point blank asked God where she was. The vision I was shown was of L.O. in her new body, it didn't quite look like her but I knew it was, playing at Jesus feet. She bounced out of heaven briefly to rub against my ankle in a final good bye before she went back.

A few days later, she meowed right outside the bedroom door. Now, yes, there are other cats in the house, but like any good mother, you always know the voice of your child. So did I know the voice of each cat.

A year and half later T. was very ill. I took her to the vet, found out she was sick beyond medical help, and made the difficult decision to put her to sleep. Just as the vet was putting the needle into her leg, L.O. appeared. I knew the moment the two were reunited because L.O. jumped as if the two were playing. Not long afterward I saw the soul, breath life not the spirit, of T. pass.

Two weeks later, T. came around the corner in the kitchen and vanished.

Since L.O. is in heaven and Jesus is caring for her, I saw the two reunited, I know T. also is there waiting. I have the promise that all my furred children will be returned to me when I arrive.

So, yes, I do believe that Christian's pets go to heaven.

Why Not Question: Will all Children be raptured?

In the 'Left Behind' books and movies, all children were considered innocent in God's eyes and raptured. However, in the film 'Apocalypse', produced by the same film makers, there were still children on Earth after Christ had removed his bride.

Which presented image is correct?

The only verse that comes even remotely close to answering this questions is part of a section Paul presents on marriage between believer/believer and believer/unbeliever.

1 Corinthians 7:14 KJV - 'For the unbelieving husband is sanctified (made holy) by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified (made holy) by the husband: else were your children unclean (impure, foul); but now they are holy (blameless, consecrated, separate, set apart).'

One would speculate, given the above information, that young children from the marriages of believer/believer and believer/unbeliever, just might be raptured, whereas children from the union of two unbelievers might not.

Does it seem fair? No. But considering what Paul wrote, it would make more sense than God rapturing all children.

Why Not Question: An A Bomb explodes in the Middle East?

In Revelation 15:2a KJV, there is a description of what many speculate the detonation of an A Bomb in the Middle East. It says - 'And I saw as if were a sea of glass mingled with fire:'

It is commonly known that sand turns to glass when exposed to high temperatures and heat. Such can be seen at the Sand Dunes in southern Colorado where lightening has struck the top and left scorched glass like patches.

If an A bomb were exploded in the desert, one would assume the result would be the same - a sea of glass caused by the explosion of fire.

However, it is interesting to note that this will NOT happen until the Anti-Christ is in power because of the rest of the verse says this - 'and them that have gotten victory over the beast (anti christ), and over this image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.'

Why Not Question : Can a world wide earthquake acutually happen?

If this question was presented to a geologist, they'd say no. However, recent quakes have triggered fault lines and more quakes, so one begins to question. It is also speculated that if the supervolcano Yellowstone ever erupts, it will trigger earthquakes in California, as well all along the Pacific coast and might well cause several other volcanoes along the 'ring of fire' to erupt.

Scary scenerio. But not as frightening as what is yet to come.

Revelation 6:12 KJV 'And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood.'

We know from recent eruptions that the sun can be blocked by ash and the moon's coloring can be affected as well.

Revelation 8:5 KJV 'And the angel took the censor, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the the earth; and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightenings, and an earthquake.'

Sounds vaguely as if there is a combination of a volcanic eruption along with an earthquake, which, scientific findings have found there are often quakes before hand. There is also lightening flashes and the sound of thunder usually associated with volcanic eruptions.

Revelation 11:13 KJV 'And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted and gave glory to the God of Heaven.'

We're used to hearing about people dying in a quake. But seven thousand?

Revelations 16:18-21 KJV 'And there were voices, and thunders and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell; and great Babylon came in remembrance of God, to give unto her to give unto her the cup of wine of the fierceness of his wrath. And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent (57-80 pounds): and men blasphemed God because of the plague thereof was exceeding great.'

Whoaa! Here's our world wide quake. Notice it says, such has not happened since men have been on earth, which is why geologists think it can't happen. However, here again is mix of odd images including thunders and lightnings - and look at this finding, they can also trigger volcanic eruptions (wikipedia) and landslides. Not to mention that a volcanic eruption can also trigger quakes, as is speculated if Yellowstone blows. Note also the huge stones falling - also consistent with volcanic eruption and such evidence still remains at Yellowstone. For the curious, the huge stones are scattered in fields at the north end of the park. Also note that the islands and mountains vanished. Something similar to this happened during the quake and tsunami a few years ago. Islands were raised and some fell. Before it happened, people couldn't remember a quake ever doing that.

So, it looks like not only are there earthquakes during the last days, but also massive volcanic eruptions.

Why Not Question: Should we worry the gospel has not yet reached the entire world?

Recently, religious leaders despaired of ever being able to reach the entire world for Christ. One assumes because they're trying to hurry the return of Christ. However, the real question to be asked is, should they really worry about it and are they really responsible for carrying the word to every nook and cranny of the world?

Answer. No.

Yes, there are verses saying people won't hear unless someone goes and that there's a huge harvest and not enough workers. Plus, all believers are charged with sharing the gospel of salvation.

However, let's look at some other verses.

Acts 2:47 KJV 'And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.'

The verse is talking about the first days of the 'church'. Only those who were supposed to believe, did.

Romans 8:29-30a KJV 'For whom he did foreknow (to begin to know first or beforehand), he also did predestinate (to mark off first or beforehand) to be conformed (having the same form)to the image (likeness) of his Son, that he might be the firstborn(literal first born) among many brethren (near or remote brother).
Moreover whom he did predestinate (same as in above verse), them he also called:'

Okay, God already knows who is and who isn't going to believe. He's always known.

Ephesians 1:5 KJV 'Having predestinated (same word meaning as in Romans) us unto the adoption (covered in an earlier blog) of children by Jesus Christ himself, according to (by) the good pleasure (good thought) of his will (wish).'

Again, those God knew who would believe in him.

Ephesians 1:11 In whom we have obtained (inheritance, to chose by lot, allot) an inheritance, being presdestinated (same meaning) according to the purpose (a setting before) of him who worketh all things after the counsel (purpose) of his own will(wish):

Same in this verse.

So, the questions is, are these leaders 'putting God in box'? They seem to be assuming they alone, are responsible for spreading the word to all corners of the world, yet, God ALREADY KNOWS who will and won't believe.

Is it so beyond modern man's thoughts that God can give the desire to a person go to say a deep forest of the Amazon, at the right time, to redeem those who will, at some point believe in Him? Perhaps there have been no missionaries to some places because its not yet time or maybe no one there will ever believe.

Bottom line, the religious leaders need to stop worrying about it and allow God to do things His way, at the appropriate moment, with those He has already chose for such work.
